COURSE DESCRIPTION: 课程概述
Location: Room 232
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of the Mandarin Chinese language. Students will acquire several skills within the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including: pronunciation, tones, the pinyin system, character recognition, and stroke order. Students will also gain insight into Chinese culture, geography, and history.
COURSE GOALS: 课程目标
• Communicate in Chinese
Students function in a variety of practical settings using listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as knowledge of the target cultures.
• Understand other cultures
Students demonstrate an understanding of traditions, customs, beliefs, and cultural contributions and how these elements relate to language.
• Connect with other disciplines and acquire information
Students connect information about the language and cultures they are learning with concepts studied in other content areas.
• Develop insight into their own language and culture
Through study of language and culture, students recognize, compare, and contrast language concepts as well as cultural perspectives, practices, and products.
• Participate in the global community
Students use the world language to communicate with speakers of that language, both at home and around the world, to improve their own communication skills and to enhance their view of themselves as citizens of the world.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: 必需材料
· Textbook Huan Ying Volume 1 /
· Workbook Huan Ying Volume 1 Part 1 and Volume 1 part 2
· Loose-leaf notebook paper
· A folder or section of a binder for keeping handouts and graded assignments
· One spiral notebook for this class only
· Pens/pencils
CLASS RULES: 课堂规定
Come to class on time and prepared to learn – with materials (no trips to locker) such as textbook, pencils, pens, notebooks.
Engage in class activities with energy and enthusiasm.
Be respectful of the teacher – listen and follow directions. Be respectful of your classmates – listen while others are talking, use polite language.
The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class. Wait for the teacher to tell you when you are permitted to leave the classroom. This will eventually be done in Chinese.
Speak Chinese as much as possible. You cannot master a language without practicing and speaking it.
EVALUATION: 成绩
Assignments (in class and at home)—50%
• Homework needs to be turned in on time. It's the student's responsibility to make up all missed work during excused absences.
• Late assignments penalty: One day late - 30% reduction
Two days late - 50% reduction Three days late - 0 grade.
Assessments (tests, quizzes, projects)—40%
• Generally, there will be a test at the end of each unit, and some short quizes each week on the first day of the week. The test dates and material will be communicated in advance.
• Individual, partner, and group projects will be assessed using the appropriate rubric(s).
Participation—10%
• This includes the areas of: involvement, preparedness, enthusiasm, individual and cooperative behaviors, group contributions, etc.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY 学术诚信
• Using any type of unapproved aide during formal or informal assessments (electronic devices, cheat sheets, etc.)
· Copying information from another student’s tests, quizzes, homework, and projects.
• Plagiarism: Copying the essential character of another’s work, whether visual or written, and submitting it as your own.
